CANTON — The city commission approved changes to the planning and zoning commission and filled two seats after hearing staff recommendations and a candidate interview.
The commission noted an ordinance change, effective July 3, 2024, that expanded the planning and zoning commission from five to seven members to include a city commissioner and/or the mayor as ex officio or designated seats. The city advertised the opening in the Sioux Valley News (July 11 and July 25) and posted the notice on the city website and social media.
The planning and zoning commission recommended appointing Brian Renaker, whose written interest and land‑survey experience and regional planning classes were cited by the chairman, to a new three‑year term. The commission moved and approved the appointment by roll call.
Separately, because the ordinance now includes a city commissioner or the mayor on the P&Z, the commission appointed Paul Loebers to fill that seat; the motion was seconded and approved on roll call.
What happens next: Both appointments take effect immediately; the commission did not amend other P&Z membership terms at this meeting.
