The Barrington Town Council voted unanimously to accept three Department of Public Works equipment bids Wednesday, replacing an aging chipper and adding dump trucks to address seasonal and fleet needs.
The council approved a bid for a 2025 Vermeer trailer‑mounted brush chipper with winch from Vermeer All Roads of Hopkinton, Mass., for $99,210.88; that figure includes a $5,750 trade‑in credit for a 2005 Carlton brush chipper. DPW staff said the chipper will replace a 20‑year‑old unit.
Councilors also approved two 2025 Ford F‑450 dump trucks with plows from Gervais Ford of Ayer, Mass., for $183,584 (two trucks) and a 2025 Ford F‑550 GVW 19,500 dump truck with plow from the same vendor for $109,355 (including a $10,007 trade‑in). DPW staff explained that the smaller trucks will serve dual roles as landscaping/plow vehicles and that the F‑550 replaces a 2013 highway dump truck.
Each bid was presented in the context of the town—s five‑year capital plan, trade‑in values and current fleet shortages. All three motions were moved, seconded and approved by roll call (5–0 votes).
DPW staff said trade‑in allowances and planning board review guided the procurement process; the council recorded the contract awards and authorized staff to finalize purchase details.
