Council approves $2,000 from contingency for DEI group’s MLK-weekend Soulforce event

The Barrington Town Council on Nov. 25 approved a $2,000 allocation from the council contingency fund to support the DEI committee’s Soulforce celebration scheduled for Jan. 18, 2025 at the Bayspring Community Center.
Councillor Cloutier introduced the item and DEI member Liana Maris presented the committee’s budget: food trucks ($875 and $800), two storytellers ($500 each), promotional materials ($325), ads ($200), and performers including Kim Trusty ($750) and Prism of Praise ($700), among other line items. Maris said the committee had previously requested $3,000 and now sought an additional $1,800; councilors simplified the request to a flat $2,000 during discussion. "We originally asked you guys for $3,000. So we're hoping for another $1,800," Maris said during her presentation.
Councilors expressed support for the event’s community and educational goals, and the motion by Councillor Cloutier to approve $2,000 from contingency passed unanimously.
