Policy updated to reflect McKinney-Vento changes extending services for some students to age 22

The policy committee reviewed revisions to the district’s homeless-children-and-youth policy (Policy 5118.1) to align with McKinney-Vento requirements and a Connecticut change effective July 1, 2023 that extends educational services for certain special-education students until age 22 or until graduation.
Carrie Latour presented the update and said the regulation now reflects that the district will provide access consistent with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and the state’s extension for eligible students. "As of 07/01/2023, Connecticut changed their law to extend educational services for some students, who receive special education services until that child turns 22 or, graduates from high school," Latour said.
Latour added that Miss Turner, the district’s McKinney-Vento liaison, helped revise and clean up Goodwin registration forms used when students lack fixed housing; the forms now will be posted online alongside the policy to make them easily accessible to families and to unaccompanied youth.
No public comment was received on the item during the meeting, and committee members did not record a formal vote; the revised policy and forms will be posted by district staff.
