Miss LaTorre, the district’s policy presenter, told the Wallingford School District policy committee on an afternoon meeting that the district revised its community, personnel and student nondiscrimination policies to standardize appeal procedures with the U.S. Department of Education’s Title IX final rule and to add a consistent complaint form for all versions.
The revisions replace variable appeal language across several model policies with a single, consistent appeals process and a uniform complaint form that complainants can use. Miss LaTorre said the law firm Shipman & Goodwin updated model policies used by the district to match the final Title IX rule. She said the edits also clarify the types of prohibited conduct, explicitly adding epithets related to sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, and include technical wording fixes for consistency across documents.
On the community policy, Miss LaTorre noted the addition of a complaint form that was not previously included; the personnel and student policy packages mirror those changes so all three versions share the same appeals language and form. She also said the policies now name a specific contact person rather than only listing a job title; if the named employee leaves, the district will update the policy text.
Committee members asked for minor clarifications. Speaker 1 pointed out, with some amusement, that the sample language included an example referencing 'Space Force,' a point Miss LaTorre confirmed with a laugh. Speaker 3 asked whether the appeals timelines or specific day counts changed; Miss LaTorre said the substance of timing did not change — the edits were to unify wording and forms, not to alter deadlines.
The committee was told the three nondiscrimination policy packages will return for a formal reading during the November instructional committee meeting. No formal vote or motion occurred during the session; Miss LaTorre said she will make the drafting edits and correct any online agenda discrepancies before the next reading.
