Council and historical association agree to secure Hall School desks after debate over preservation risks

Representatives of the Exeter Historical Association asked the council for guidance to secure desks at the historic Hall School so the building can safely host visitors. The association said desks and seats are unstable and posed a safety risk without being fastened to the floor.
Council members raised preservation concerns about drilling into the original flooring and possible moisture issues under the floorboards. One council member said drilling could permit moisture to penetrate the floor; association members replied that the desks were historically secured and that appropriately sized screws and care could avoid penetrating the boards.
After discussion the council adopted a motion directing the Department of Public Works to determine appropriate-size screws (or use existing screws if appropriate) and to secure desks and chairs in the correct orientation, with a representative from the historical association present when the work is done. The motion passed by voice vote.
Council members said future work on town historic properties should continue to be coordinated with the council and the historical association and that no work should proceed without consultation and a representative present.
