Exeter council approves firearms dealer license for Range Inc.; applicants emphasize training and outreach

The Exeter Town Council approved a firearms dealer license for Range Inc., allowing applicants William (Bill) Worthy and Andre Mendez to operate at 560 South County Trail. Council members opened a public hearing, heard from the applicants and from residents, then voted to approve the license by voice vote.

At the hearing, Bill Worthy said the business would take over an existing range unit and continue range operations, retail and training. "We do a lot for the community outreach programs," Worthy said, noting work with local police departments and community groups and offering safety and "stop the bleed" training for families. The applicants told the council they are close to receiving a federal firearms license (FFL) and that the previous tenant—s departure reflected financial rather than regulatory issues.

A resident, Asa Davis of Beechwood Hill Trail, told the council he hopes the new operation succeeds but warned that businesses operating in residential zones can hold an economic advantage over commercial properties and urged the town to ensure a level playing field.

Council members asked practical questions about outstanding fees and inspections; staff noted advertising fees (identified during the hearing) and the need for a town walk-through before issuing the local license. After closing the public hearing, the council moved to approve the application and members voted in favor by voice vote.

The license approval allows Range Inc. to proceed with local permitting steps; the applicants remain responsible for securing their federal firearms license and providing any outstanding paperwork identified by town staff.
