Board approves winter work to extend trail from Sandy Beach to Celia Pines

The Mitchell Park and Recreation Board voted Dec. 24 to move forward with a proposal to extend the asphalt trail at Sandy Beach into Celia Pines as an aggregate trail, beginning winter clearing operations where brush and buckthorn block the route.
Dwight Scott of the Powell City Pedallers said the bike committee walked and GPS-mapped the proposed alignment and identified two primary areas needing brush and dead-tree removal. "We went out and walked it, flagged it, and they ran GPS on it," Scott said, describing the sections near Sandy Beach and the south end in Camparoyah that need clearing.
Staff said the project could begin as soon as this winter, weather permitting, and emphasized minimizing additional access points for neighborhood impacts. Board members noted prior volunteer assistance — including football players who hauled brush — and supported bringing a formal map and work plan to the January meeting for next steps.
The motion to approve initiating the trail work was made and passed by voice vote. Additional engineering, scheduling and volunteer coordination will be handled by staff and the bike committee.
