The Yankton City Commission on Oct. 28 approved an amphitheater railing project at an estimated cost of $33,725 and authorized the finance officer to include the necessary funds in a 2024 budget supplement if required.
City Manager Leon clarified that the project involves two separate sections of railing that are not contiguous, intended to create breakout points in the center‑side sections of the amphitheater. Leon said the correction does not change the project cost and offered to provide an image to commissioners to illustrate placement.
A commissioner who spoke in support said the railing had been discussed for a long time and that staff had worked through analyses and obstacles to find a cost‑effective approach. "I very much appreciate that we've taken the time to do the analysis, to figure out how to make it cost effective," the commissioner said, adding that patrons for summer concerts would be pleased.
The motion to approve the project passed on a roll call vote. Staff were directed to proceed with project completion as weather allows and to include funding in the supplement as recommended.
What comes next: Community Development and Public Works staff will coordinate installation and return to the commission if further budget adjustments or design clarifications are needed.
