Board solicits mural concepts, student designs for U.S. 250th celebration

The board suggested multiple themes that could be combined in large-format murals: colonial-era flags and the Betsy Ross flag, the Constitution as a scroll, the Pledge of Allegiance, military history across wars, Ellis Island and immigration, technology and social media as modern connectors, and iconic monuments such as the Liberty Bell and Washington crossing the Delaware. Several members proposed a collage approach to tell multiple stories across the venue’s large mural panels.
Board members emphasized student participation. One board member said they had already reached out to local design classes and planned to have submissions for review in November so selections could be finalized before winter break.
"I think we need a flag, whether it be a colony flag," a board member suggested when outlining potential visual anchors for the project.
Staff will compile the board’s suggestions, provide dimensions and guidance to the contacted professors and students, and present student designs to the board at the November meeting.
