Mitchell Sports & Events Authority approves grants for three local events totaling $21,700

The Mitchell Sports and Events Authority voted Sept. 6 to award $21,700 in event grants to support three local tournaments and festivals.
In public presentations earlier in the meeting, organizers described expected attendance and local economic benefits. An applicant for the Dakota Yate Challenge volleyball tournament asked the authority for $6,500 to help cover start-up expenses for the event’s first volleyball year and said the group expects 16 teams to come to Mitchell in October. "We are requesting the $6,500 to help offset a lot of those expenses this first year to kind of get our feet under us with volleyball," the applicant said during the presentation.
Caller Dylan, representing the Raisin Rank bull-riding finals, described that event’s production and marketing plans and said the series has grown its social-media following substantially: "we're just shy of, like, a 46,000," he said, noting increased ticketing and VIP sales. Dylan told the board he expects to run roughly 30–45 larger bulls each night, plus youth series entries, and described after‑party and sponsor plans.
At the meeting, Mitchell Sports and Events Authority staff provided the SEA’s financial report. "Our awarded checks that have been written so far for 2024 is $63,450," staff member Aaron Heeb said, and "that leaves a current available fund balance of $86,550." Heeb also reported year‑to‑date collections through August of $185,650 and 5,240 room nights sold through August.
After discussion, the board moved and passed the following motions by voice vote: to award $5,000 to the Raisin Rank bull‑riding finals (motion moved by Tim, seconded by Dave), to award $4,200 to the Dakota Yate Challenge volleyball event (motion moved by Emily, seconded by Tim), and to award $12,500 to the Hoop City Classic (motion moved by Joe, seconded by Dave). The minutes of the previous meeting and the financial report were also approved by voice vote.
The grants are intended to support production costs, lodging offsets for officials and visiting teams, and event promotion. Board members and applicants discussed hotel-room impacts, officials’ comp rooms and promotional plans; applicants emphasized local benefits and community engagement but estimated hotel revenue and attendance figures as projections rather than guaranteed amounts.
The board set its next meeting for Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Mitchell and adjourned.
