Traffic authority backs request to lower neighborhood speed limit from 30 to 25 mph

On Dec. 16 the Norwalk Police Traffic Authority authorized staff to send a request to the State of Connecticut seeking a reduction of the posted speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 mph on Laura Street, Austin Street and surrounding neighborhood streets, citing anticipated increases in student pedestrian traffic from the new South Norwalk Elementary School.
Nate Fanhandle, presenting for TMP, said the request covers the broader neighborhood — including Lexington, Knapp Street, Oxford Street and the Meadow Street extension — and is intended to lower vehicle speeds as more students walk to the school. "In conjunction with that sidewalk project, we're also gonna be requesting, a reduction in speed limit from 30 miles an hour to 25," Fanhandle said.
The authority’s motion authorizes TMP to send the formal OSTA letter to the state asking for the change; the decision was made by unanimous voice vote.
Next steps: TMP will prepare and transmit the formal speed‑limit request to the OSTA office at the state level and continue coordination with school and public‑safety officials.
