Traffic authority gives contingent approval to Boston Build Up 10K in Rowayton

The Norwalk Police Traffic Authority on Dec. 16 approved a contingent permit for the Boston Build Up 10K, a recurring road race in the Rowayton neighborhood scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 5. The authority’s approval requires final sign-offs from the police department, public works and the Transportation, Mobility and Parking (TMP) office before a permit will be issued.
TMP staff described the event as recurring and said the department has coordinated with the police in prior years. Chief Denno told the authority, "This is a recurring event that happens every year, and, it seems to to occur without a problem. And we will be ready on time for this." Staff estimated the event window would run roughly 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the race beginning at about 9 a.m. and concluding by 10:30 a.m.
Organizers and staff confirmed additional police staffing will be required to cover key intersections. The event organizer, Jim Gerwick, said the race "always" hires officers and indicated about "4 or 5" officers would be used. Deputy/assistant police leadership will follow up with the organizer to arrange staffing and intersection coverage.
TMP and the organizer also clarified restroom arrangements. Staff said the permit listing for porta‑potties will be amended because the race will instead use school restrooms; one presenter said, "we've never used Porta John's. We always, you know, just utilize the school restrooms."
Commissioner Sumter moved to approve the event with the condition that all required city departments complete their reviews and sign off; the motion was modified on the record to enumerate the departments (police, public works, Transportation, Mobility and Parking) and then carried unanimously by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will confirm departmental approvals, finalize the police staffing plan with the organizer, and amend the permit record to reflect restroom arrangements before issuing a permit.
