City Manager Amy Leon told the Yankton City Commission on July 8 that city crews will continue fogging for mosquitoes, conducting traps and testing for West Nile virus and asking residents to eliminate standing water.
"We are fogging for mosquitoes," Leon said during her report, noting fogging has taken place since early June because of wet weather. "We're actually fogging, and trying to prevent West Nile." Leon said the city is participating in a state grant this year that helped cover application costs and that crews will continue fogging when weather conditions permit.
Leon opened the report by thanking Parks and Events staff and volunteers for organizing a large, family-friendly July Fourth weekend. She named multiple staff and volunteers for special recognition, including Todd Larson and Luke Yeomans of Parks & Events and a list of employees and volunteers who worked overtime during the festivities.
She also said the Parks Advisory Board and the Planning Commission will be consulted about a tree in front of the downtown brewery that has been lifting sidewalk panels, and she reminded commissioners that she will discuss budget scheduling with the school district and asked them to check their calendars for an August meeting time.
Leon said the city will continue testing mosquito traps around town and that fogging is being performed citywide when conditions allow. She urged residents to help by eliminating standing water and said the city will provide further updates through local media and advisory boards.
The report drew no follow-up questions from commissioners. Leon said she would attend a county meeting the next afternoon to request shared operations funding for dispatch, the center, the airport and the library.
