Members of Norwalk's Commission on the Status of Women presented the panel’s recent work and a proposed name change to the Ordinance Committee on Dec. 17, asking the body to consider renaming the commission "Commission on Gender Equity" and updating bylaws to explicitly include transgender and other marginalized gender identities.
Christina Testabuzzi, introduced as a co‑vice chair of the commission, described accomplishments since the commission’s 2021 reconstitution, priorities for 2024–25 (child care, sports equity, voting awareness), and outreach efforts to diversify representation on city boards. She said the proposed name change and bylaw language are intended to reflect intersectional and inclusive priorities.
Committee members welcomed the presentation and urged care with terminology. Anne Wennerstrand recommended considering the phrase "gender diverse" rather than "gender nonconforming" for greater inclusivity. Staff said the commission could revise its bylaws and the ordinance language before the committee’s next meeting; if ready in January, the committee could place the ordinance on public hearing in February. Christina Testabuzzi and commissioners agreed to further edits and to coordinate with staff to finalize language.
No formal vote was taken. Committee members asked the commission to provide revised language for committee review and potential placement on a future agenda and public hearing date.
