The Muskegon County Community Development and Strategic Planning Committee approved an agreement with the Muskegon Conservation District to provide ecological restoration services at Dune Harbor Park for the period Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2026, funded by a Consumers-related grant.
Staff described the agreement as part of a larger Consumers Energy-related grant award the county applied for roughly a year earlier. "This is, about a year ago, maybe a bit longer than that, we applied for our Consumers Energy Planet grant," staff said, and explained that the conservation district will provide plant material and other services for ecological restoration as a portion of the overall grant work.
Commissioners asked about the invasive species the district will treat at Dune Harbor Park. The public-record discussion listed phragmites, bittersweet, milfoil in the lakes, tree-of-heaven and black locust among species to be mapped and treated. The committee voted on the motion as presented and then agreed to a friendly amendment to specify the start date as Jan. 1, 2025. The amended motion carried on a voice vote.
Why it matters: The agreement establishes county-funded ecological restoration activity at a county park with outside-partner implementation and lists specific invasive-plant targets. The committee did not provide a complete grant summary or the dollar amount awarded during the meeting; staff indicated additional elements of the grant will be brought to the board as the project progresses.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with the agreement and return to the board with additional grant-related items and project details as they become available.
