Merced County workforce officials told the Board of Supervisors on April 8 that they will open a flagship workforce center at the Merced Mall and expand the county’s service footprint from two job centers to four.
Leslie Abasta Cummings, chair of the Workforce Development Board, introduced Eric Serrato, director of the Department of Workforce Investment, who said the new flagship will be roughly 8,000 square feet and will co-locate multiple workforce-service providers. Serrato said the expansion is partly funded by a $350,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation and that additional centers will include a Los Banos location co-located at Merced College’s West Side campus, where staff expect to support training and career-technical education for local job seekers.
Supervisors praised the project as an improvement over existing facilities and said co-location with Merced College will better connect job-seekers to training. Serrato said the county will set a grand opening timeline and continue outreach to ensure centers meet local needs. The board unanimously approved the related director recommendations.
