Inyo County adopts California joint strategy on outdoor recreation and wildfire resilience

The Inyo County Board of Supervisors voted March 25 to adopt California—fs Joint Strategy for Sustainable Outdoor Recreation and Wildfire Resilience, a policy framework developed in March 2023 by the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force.
County Administrator New Greenburg presented the strategy as a signal of partnership with neighboring jurisdictions and land-management agencies and as a means to improve eligibility for state and federal funding for wildfire-resilience and recreation-related projects. The strategy emphasizes four priority areas to guide regional collaboration.
Board members broadly supported the adoption but used the discussion to highlight concerns about implementation and funding. Supervisors urged the county to press for stronger business-sector engagement (beyond a limited set of private partners) and to ensure maintenance funding for recreation infrastructure rather than funding one-off construction projects that later fall into disrepair.
Several supervisors also urged the strategy to reflect a toolbox approach to fuels reduction, including mechanical thinning and grazing where appropriate, in addition to prescribed fire. Another supervisor urged development of evacuation plans tailored to high-use recreation areas.
With those caveats noted, the board adopted the joint strategy on a voice vote. County staff said the action does not obligate the county to new operational duties but positions Inyo County to partner for grants and regional projects.
