Council adopts prohibited-technology policy banning TikTok on city-owned devices to comply with state law

The Mount Pleasant City Council unanimously adopted a prohibited-technology policy intended to comply with state law restricting certain social-media apps on government devices.
Staff summarized Texas Senate Bill 1893 and the governor's directive requiring governmental entities to remove TikTok and certain other apps from devices the agencies own or lease by Nov. 20. The draft policy presented to council would ban the listed apps on city-owned or -leased devices, restrict personal devices from accessing those apps while on the city network, and apply to employees, elected officials, contractors and interns.
Staff indicated there were no anticipated direct costs for implementing the policy and offered to answer questions; council members asked about how the restriction would be enforced on the network and staff said access would be blocked on the city network.
The council moved, seconded and recorded a unanimous vote to adopt Resolution 2024-17 adopting the prohibited-technology policy.
