Detective Villarreal told the council the training helped him connect the subject to their children and to remain engaged until help could be provided. The chief said the subject later reached out and thanked Detective Villarreal for saving his life.
Council members praised the negotiation, underscored the value of training and recognized the detective and the department’s negotiator program. The recognition was ceremonial and intended to highlight police training and crisis‑intervention resources.
