The Tamworth Select Board voted Nov. 7 to change how the town issues transfer‑station vehicle stickers, increasing the fee for additional stickers and placing an upper limit on the number that may be issued per address.
During a public hearing, a board presenter said the present system — which issues two free stickers per address and charges $10 for additional passes — will be revised so that extra stickers cost $20 each and no more than six stickers will be issued to any one address. The presenter said the current permit cycle expires at year‑end and the change will take effect with the new sticker run in January. The board approved the change by roll call vote.
A resident asked why fees were being raised; board members and staff replied that the transfer station costs about a half‑million dollars a year to operate and modest additional revenue would help cover operating costs. Board members also noted the sticker price had not been raised in many years.
The board discussed operational details for implementing the cap: permitting staff will keep the two free stickers available only at the town office, sell single additional stickers on site at the transfer station, and use a real‑time internet‑linked tracking system so attendants can prevent duplicates and enforce the six‑sticker maximum. Officials said the town is finalizing procedures and will have systems in place to prevent over‑issuance.
The motion to accept the proposed changes passed on a roll‑call vote; the presenter indicated stickers were being printed and that residents would have through January to obtain updated permits under the new policy.
Next steps: the town will finalize operational procedures for on‑site sales and real‑time tracking, and the new pricing and cap will be implemented with the new sticker cycle in January.
