Representatives of the Brookdale Women's Society announced a regular Saturday 10 a.m. gathering and introduced Lauren Varney, a resident who offered to run a public lifestyle-medicine series in Brookfield.
Varney, who introduced herself as a non-practicing physician and certified health-and-wellness coach, described lifestyle medicine as a medical specialty that uses evidence-based lifestyle interventions to treat chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity, and to address mental-health concerns, fatigue and low energy. She outlined six pillars of lifestyle medicine (healthy eating, exercise, restorative sleep, social connections, minimizing risky substances, and stress management) and said she would use Eat Right for Life as a foundation for the nutrition component.
Varney proposed a foundations class followed by a seven-week group-coaching session, open to the public. She said a minimum of eight participants would be needed for the group-coaching format and quoted a fee of $85 for the seven-week session (another exchange referenced $100 for an 11-week session). Town staff and board members discussed scheduling and paperwork for reserving the townhouse and confirmed the yoga slot on Thursday mornings could be used.
Next steps: Varney will complete space-reservation paperwork and the town will share availability and fee details; the program was tentatively scheduled to start in September.
