Jacksonville — The City Council voted to award contracts for demolition and asbestos abatement at the former Gardendale nursing facility, a vacant structure the city says has deteriorated and been stripped of valuable wiring and equipment.
Staff said the building at 1521 East Rusk is roughly 32,000 square feet and has been vacant for about a decade. Sealed bids produced multiple offers; DEA was the lowest qualified bidder on demolition, and Air Quality Associates the low bidder for asbestos abatement. Staff recommended awarding demolition to DEA and abatement to Air Quality Associates.
The city’s bid package covered structure demolition but excluded slab removal, which staff said would more than double costs and is expected to be a future property-owner responsibility. Staff also noted JEDCO contributed about $100,000 toward demolition funding. Council approved the awards by voice vote.
City staff said the contracts will allow the city to address a longstanding blighted structure and will free up additional property for future use or sale, subject to environmental and legal clearance processes.
The council directed staff to proceed with contract execution and reported that additional ARPA funding approved earlier in the meeting will help cover further demolitions in coming fiscal periods.
