Manor names inaugural Youth Advisory Commissioners and approves TML youth summit attendance

Manor City Council on Dec. 18 appointed five students to its inaugural Youth Advisory Commission and authorized staff to finalize costs and registration for the Texas Municipal League Youth Summit.
The council read the commissioners' names and school affiliations and a judge administered the oath of office for terms running from Dec. 18, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2025. Yolandra Valderrama, the city's youth liaison, said the summit — scheduled for Jan. 16 in Beaumont — is expected to cost about $2,500 and will cover five commissioners and up to three chaperones.
"This summit is not just for the kids," Valderrama told the council, describing workshops for city leaders and youth commissioners. She said the trip includes leadership training and networking opportunities aimed at helping Manor's young commissioners bring ideas back to the city.
Councilmembers moved to authorize the city manager to finalize costs and complete summit registration for the commissioners and staff; the motion passed on voice vote. The council also provided certificates and time for photos after the oath was administered.
The appointments establish a formal avenue for youth input on local government and create a schedule of training and engagement the council said it plans to support. The council encouraged the new commissioners to report back on ideas and initiatives they develop at the summit.
The council did not adopt a separate budget ordinance for travel; Valderrama said the approximate cost would come from existing funds and include lodging and registration for chaperones. The next step for the commissioners will be the training and orientation described by staff.
