Council sets Feb. 25, 2025 special election to fill Council Place 6

City staff presented a resolution to order a special election to fill the unexpired term for Council Place 6 after the mayor accepted a resignation previously submitted by a councilmember. The proposed timeline included a candidate period that would begin immediately if the resolution were approved, early voting from Feb. 10–21, 2025, and Election Day on Feb. 25, 2025. Staff recommended contracting with Kendall County Elections and authorizing the city manager to execute the agreement.
Staff noted a tradeoff in scheduling: certain council meetings in February could be affected and that a canvas could be scheduled on the night of the regular council meeting with a special session as needed. A council member asked whether the election could be delayed a week; staff replied that the city could consider alternative dates but recommended the Feb. 25 date to meet statutory timing requirements. The council voted to approve the resolution to order the special election and to contract with Kendall County Elections by voice vote; no member voiced opposition.
