Westerly council and school committee sworn in; Christopher Duhamel named council president

The town clerk led a series of oaths in which each new councilor and school committee member repeated a pledge to support the constitutions of the United States and the State of Rhode Island and to abide by the charter and ordinances of the Town of Westerly. Those sworn included Mary Eshalaba, Dylan J. Lapetra, Christopher A. Duhamel, Michael T. Niemeyer, Alexandra L. Healy, Rose Vandover, William J. Aiello and Christie Walston, among others.
Following the oaths, the council conducted nominations and a poll vote for the position of council president. After roll-call-style voting, Christopher A. Duhamel was declared council president. In the vice-president election, Mary Shalaba was elected following nominations and a roll-call vote.
Council President Duhamel offered brief remarks about the council's priorities for the coming term, citing affordable housing, resilient infrastructure, wastewater treatment plant funding and an $80 million bond program as items of focus. The council also announced deadlines for applications for assistant solicitor and other municipal appointments, with interviews scheduled for the Dec. 16 meeting and an application deadline of Dec. 9.
