A councilor presented comparables showing neighboring town clerks earn between roughly $81,567 and $96,000 and asked that the council use contingency funds to cover the increase. "Erin really has an awful lot of work on her plate," the presenter said, calling her "very, very capable" and noting increased early-voting days and probate workload.
Several council members supported the raise but voiced concern about process and parity. One member said raises should be handled through the finance board and public hearing process and worried the action could create a slippery slope for subsequent individual raises. Another urged an executive-session discussion about workload and staffing to improve work–life balance for the clerk.
After discussion, a motion to approve the request was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote with at least one abstention being recorded.
