Board debates dress-code enforcement, sends draft back to policy committee

The Superintendent said the draft gives administrators discretion for enforcement and that, while teachers may identify violations, the preference is for those referrals to be handled by administration to avoid 'putting students on the spot.' Member 3 and others said they would like to see clearer faculty responsibilities for reporting or supporting enforcement so administrators are not left to carry the entire burden.
Trustees also discussed timing: one member suggested that if the policy is approved it should take effect at the beginning of a school year rather than midyear to reduce confusion for schools that already have individual dress codes. The Superintendent and other trustees emphasized the policy committee's multi-month review process and said the draft is a living document that can be revised further.
No final vote was taken tonight; the board directed the policy committee to revisit faculty roles and implementation timing and return with proposed revisions.
