Administrators for the Booker T. Washington Learning Center presented updates on alternative-education programming, including a rebrand, restorative-justice implementation, a revised league (point) system, a formalized transition process back to home schools, and a pilot of Edgenuity for credit recovery and supplemental coursework.
The presenter described restorative circles as the capstone approach to reduce disciplinary incidents and improve academic outcomes, and said staff and external trainers have begun intensive training and will meet regularly with students and staff. The revised league system sets milestone points and rewards; for example, league three requires community service hours and completion of SEL lessons to advance.
Administrators explained the transition process for students returning to home schools: students prepare a presentation and meet with the receiving school’s team (principal, counselor and, if applicable, special education staff) to ensure a supported return. The school reported seven graduates last year and said they’ve joined a National Alternative Education Association cohort.
The school will pilot Edgenuity for original-credit and credit-recovery needs; presenters noted the platform includes SEL lessons, test-prep and language options and is used by many districts in the state.
