Board approves trimmed instructional-materials list, citing cost savings and usage tracking

The Rockingham County Board of Education voted to approve the district’s revised instructional materials list during its Aug. 6 meeting.
Dr. Perkins presented the item, saying the district has consolidated or eliminated multiple site subscriptions and will reduce the number of district licenses for several products. "We have cut Newsela, Discovery Tech Books, Pear Deck, Delta Map, Screencastify," Perkins said, and added that Zoom purchases will be limited and the district expects the contracted price to fall if fewer subscriptions are purchased.
Perkins told the board the district can track usage for major resources such as iReady and Achieve3000 and will monitor which schools and students use specific platforms. He said some high‑school resources will remain targeted to subject needs, while elementary and middle schools will continue with districtwide core resources.
A board member moved to accept action item 7.1; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board recorded 11 ayes on the motion.
Perkins said the consolidation was possible in part because a large, one‑time textbook purchase earlier in the year increased flexibility in the current budget. He told the board staff will continue to communicate with schools about which resources remain available and how funds are allocated.
The action item was presented under Policy 3200 (instructional materials review) and the board’s consent and action procedures; no amendments were offered during the meeting.
