Students present projects; board approves calendar, field trips and DLVA charter amendment

Students from West Milwaukee Intermediate and Docu presented class work and schoolwide projects during the meeting, demonstrating the district's use of "depth and complexity" icons, maker and engineering projects, and a schoolwide reading initiative. Students described academic struggles and goals, collaborative problem-solving and hands-on engineering tasks; one student said the programs helped peers "get out of their comfort zone" and practice asking questions.

Superintendent Doctor Robinson opened his report with condolences and a call for vigilance following the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, and then outlined legislative and district updates. Robinson told the board that statewide K–12 property tax levies are rising and that the district will continue advocacy on funding issues.

On action items, the board moved and approved several items on voice votes: the consent agenda (minutes, employment and financial summaries); extended field trips for Central and Hale dance teams to perform at a Badgerad/Disney showcase in Orlando; charter amendments for the Deeper Learning Virtual Academy that include dissolution of its elementary program; and approval of Version 1 of the 2025 school calendar after hearing student feedback (the superintendent said 77.9% of survey respondents preferred Version 1, which sets winter break Dec. 22–Jan. 2 and spring break Mar. 30–Apr. 7).

After the votes, the board announced it would move into an executive session to consider student disciplinary expulsion orders under the statute cited on the record and took a roll call to begin that session.

The meeting included multiple expressions of appreciation to students, staff and community members; staff highlighted upcoming events such as Docu exhibition night on Jan. 23.
