The North Smithfield Town Council approved on second reading a revised salary and wage ordinance on Dec. 16, moving several positions to updated pay classifications.
Finance staff said the ordinance reflects an earlier packet with minor signature updates and that only a few positions changed (for example, water and sewer superintendent, assistant superintendent, and coordinator were returned to hourly classification). Councilors asked about an EMA deputy line that showed a decrease; finance staff explained there is no current deputy and reimbursements from the state affect the budget line.
Council members also discussed Camp Phoenix, a town-run but self-funded summer program. Staff said Camp Phoenix is entirely self-funded and would increase participant rates to cover pay increases; the program has high demand and has had to turn away interested families. Councilors asked whether the town is being asked to cover those increases; staff said the council must approve the pay rates because the camp operates under town oversight, though the program pays its own staff.
On roll call the ordinance passed with one dissent: Councilor Punczak recorded a "No"; other named members voted "Yes."
