The East Providence School Committee approved a revised code of student conduct on its second reading after presenters said the policy was drafted with administrators, teachers and legal counsel and aligns with state law.
The updated policy includes restorative practices and language allowing the district to require restitution for vandalism and property damage, which a committee member said would help ensure accountability. “Therefore, you can financially hold a child responsible and we can put a price on it,” Speaker 6 said while explaining the restorative/restitution provision.
Committee members discussed operational details: teachers and parents will be required to sign off on the policy, administrators will include incidents in weekly discipline reports, and members asked for clarity on how frequently the committee would be notified when restitution is pursued. The superintendent noted weekly discipline reports would capture vandalism incidents and consequences.
The motion to approve was made, seconded and carried with the committee recording the approval in open session. Members asked staff to ensure the policy and hyperlinks to related state law are distributed to teachers and families and to include follow-up discipline data in regular reports to the committee.
The committee approved the second reading and adoption of the student conduct code; staff were directed to distribute the policy and continue providing discipline reporting.
