New Shoreham adopts written information security plan required by state law

The Town Council adopted a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) that defines how the town handles personally identifiable information in both electronic and paper form. A staff presenter said the WISP is required by Rhode Island General Law and accompanies a relaunch of mandatory cybersecurity training and upgraded email-security protocols for council and staff.
Staff clarified that while there will be additional software costs for encrypted email and other security tools, the town does not expect additional IT consulting fees; many of the necessary licenses and software upgrades will be absorbed in the existing technology budget. Council members asked clarifying questions about trust involvement and cost implications; staff said the town’s insurance trust recommended the WISP and provided guidance.
A motion to adopt the WISP was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council members were told to expect rollout of new training and changes to end-user procedures in coming weeks.
