Update on Warren’s Smart Streetlights: Prism to Stock Parts; Council Authorizes DPW to Explore State-Controlled Lights

Brian Woodbury of Prism Streetlights reported that a former Quantela employee has spun off a support organization and will continue software support for Warren's Quantela smart-streetlighting system. Woodbury said Prism will purchase 100 SmartStreetLighting nodes and two gateways to hold in reserve for maintenance needs. He explained gateways carry SIM cards and associated cellular fees, and that at one point Symcon (the original integrator) had divested itself of cellular payments; the town ended up carrying some of those recurring costs.
DPW Director Brian Wheeler said the town is budgeting higher maintenance and will explore returning state-owned lights to state control to limit maintenance liabilities. Wheeler proposed centralizing gateway billing under Prism to reduce multiple bills and streamline maintenance contracts.
After discussion, a motion was made and passed authorizing the DPW director to pursue the process of turning state-owned streetlights back to the state and to conduct business with Rhode Island Energy and vendors to investigate options, with the understanding the town would return with a formal proposal for the budget session.
Quote: "We will be purchasing 100 SmartStreetLighting nodes... and two gateways… to have those on hand in case of a failure," Woodbury said.
The council requested a written proposal and cost breakdown be returned at the next meeting to inform budget deliberations.
