Zoning board approves Kara McGarrin’s 26-foot garage height variance; staff suggests code review

Coventry resident Kara McGarrin asked the zoning board for a height variance to build a detached garage 26 feet tall where the zoning code allows a maximum of 15 feet for an accessory structure. McGarrin said she needs the additional height for storage and to accommodate family vehicles.
Planning staff acknowledged that the 15-foot limit for accessory structures is low for modern garage designs and suggested the code might be revisited outside the hearing. Board members reviewed the application, noted surrounding conditions (one member said the property is surrounded by a cemetery and visibility will not be an issue), and moved to approve the variance. The board recorded approval with the staff report referenced and recommended waiving the ratification process as with other items on the agenda.
The board’s vote approved the height variance and instructed staff to record the decision consistent with the staff report.
