Nashville School District transfers $1.61 million to building fund; superintendent flags salary options

The Nashville School District board unanimously approved moving $1,609,217.21 from Fund 02/2001 (operating) to the building fund to address a statutory limit on carryover balances.
Superintendent Graham explained the law allows districts to carry over only 20% of gross revenue and that the district’s June 30 balance exceeded that cap by $1,609,217.21. "My first recommendation and my main recommendation for us to take care of business tonight is for the board to transfer that amount of money out of fund 02/2001 over to the building fund," Graham said.
Graham told the board much of the transferred amount will remain in the building fund, but he estimated roughly $400,000–$600,000 could be redirected soon to address salary-schedule improvements or one-time bonuses. "Any of that 1,600,000 could go to teachers," Graham said, and asked principals to submit proposals for one-time or recurring uses tied to student learning.
A motion to transfer $1,609,217.21 carried 4‑0. Graham said the district has preserved building-fund capacity that allowed recent local projects, such as a tennis court, without raising taxes.
No amendments or alternate allocations were made at the meeting; Graham said he will return with specific salary recommendations when he has numbers and campus requests.
