Oak Grove hires retired wastewater operator Brian Lehi for interim coverage while city searches for permanent hire

The Oak Grove Board of Alderwomen on Oct. 21 approved an engagement agreement with retired chief wastewater operator Brian Lehi to provide interim services at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
Corey, speaking for city staff, said hiring pools for certified plant operators had been thin: since Aug. 29 the city received four applicants, two of whom were unqualified and one who would not relocate. Licensing requires hands-on plant experience measured in years, and the city’s plant requires a Class B license while an A license requires about 5.5 years of plant experience, staff said. Staff proposed contracting with Lehi for one eight-hour day per week for up to six months to review paperwork, verify sample submissions and keep the plant within its permit while the city continues recruitment.
Corey said Kobe, the plant’s lab technician, works on-site daily and would continue routine operations; if the city hires a qualified candidate during the six-month window Lehi would assist with transition rather than remain for the full term. The board approved the engagement by motion and voice vote.
