Oak Grove approves Lick Skillet Days permit, renews MARC hazardous-waste participation and calls April 2025 election

At its Nov. 6 meeting the Oak Grove Board of Alderwomen approved several routine but community-facing actions.

Special event permit: Ruth Ann Hafner, president of the Oak Grove Chamber of Commerce, asked the board to approve Lick Skillet Days for the last weekend in September 2025 with a Friday 3 p.m.–10 p.m. schedule and Saturday 10 a.m.–10 p.m. The proposal included a small walking parade and an open-container beverage area on Broadway (Thirteenth to Eleventh Street) with wristbands and ID checks managed by the American Legion and a contracted vendor. The police chief reported there were no major alcohol-related incidents in prior years. The board moved, seconded and approved the permit by voice vote.

MARC household hazardous waste program: City staff (Matt) recommended renewing participation in the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) household hazardous waste program for 2025 at a per-capita rate of $1.13, which staff estimated would make the 2025 participation fee about $9,938 (applied to the city's 2023 population estimate). Staff reported that 118 Oak Grove households used the program through the third quarter of 2024, disposing approximately 16,800 pounds of hazardous waste; the board discussed outreach strategies to increase participation and approved renewal by voice vote.

Election ordinance adopted: The board conducted first and second readings by title of Bill 20-420, an ordinance calling an election in the City of Oak Grove on April 8, 2025, for one alderwoman in each ward. The clerk read the title twice and, after a motion to adopt, the clerk called the roll; Rachel Kilmer, Melissa Johnson, Sierra McMichael, Tracy Newcomer and Pam Pope voted "Yes" and the bill became Ordinance No. 2,119.
