At the Sept. 24 public forum Neil Gill, who said he lives two houses outside Maplewood on Cantonberry Avenue, urged the council to consider traffic-calming measures on Canterbury near the Wilkinson improvements (formerly Wilkinson School). Gill said people "come flying up the hill" from La Crosselden and that replacing and enforcing stop signs has helped at nearby locations; he asked the city to consider stationed police presence, radar signs or other measures to encourage compliance with the 25 mph limit, citing pedestrian safety near apartments and the school and anticipated traffic from the 3 Rivers Freightway.
Gill said his neighborhood has worked with the alderman to replace stop signs at the Wilkinson Apartments and that the change "is having good effects so far" because drivers are stopping. He requested the council explore similar measures at the Canterbury, Greenwood and Marshall intersections and to coordinate with police and public works on feasible short-term steps.
The mayor acknowledged the request and staff said it will prioritize and determine feasibility with the police department and public works.
