Maplewood council approves grants, software contract and hears park flood updates

Maplewood City Council on Nov. 12 approved two resolutions, heard several administrative reports and received updates on park damage from recent flooding.
Resolution 24-61: The council authorized the city manager to submit a municipal waste reduction (document shredding) grant application to the St. Louis County Department of Public Health. The motion was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Resolution RS 24-22: Council approved a software subscription agreement for a human capital system with an annual cost of $27,722.20. Staff told council they reviewed multiple vendor proposals and selected what they described as a well-developed municipal solution.
Parks and flooding: The city manager reported that Maplewood won a $410,000 municipal park grant for Veil Park, the maximum award available for the municipality’s size, and said the amount will be included in next fiscal year budgeting. The manager also reported Deer Creek Park and Kellogg Park were damaged in recent rains: staff and the fire department have been cleaning up, playground equipment and the baseball backstop may require repairs, and the dog park’s wood-chip surface washed away and will need remulching. The manager said reimbursement funding may be available but the city will use parks funds in the near term. Council asked that flood-repair costs be added to the upcoming budget work session for further discussion.
Other business: Manager’s updates included candidate-filing results for April elections and enforcement actions for delinquent business-license fees; the structure at 2834 Bartold Avenue will be demolished this month after fire-department training, and staff reported installation of temporary signage for new speed humps on Wendover with permanent signage and paint to follow.
What happens next: Council directed that flood-repair funding and related options be included in the budget work session and that staff continue permit and procurement steps for the software subscription. The shredding grant application will be submitted to St. Louis County for consideration.
