Fayetteville accepts $25 million federal Safe Streets for All grant to fund five corridor projects

City staff briefed council on a $25 million award from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program. The package covers five projects: Maple Street (Gregg–Garland) construction, College Avenue (Sycamore–Township) and School Avenue (MLK–15th) detailed design, and two study/design scopes on Joyce Boulevard and Gregg Avenue. The program also includes $500,000 for education and outreach activities.
The grant requires a 25% local match (~$7.25 million), to be budgeted through existing or future bond programs; the University of Arkansas committed $1.25 million toward the Maple Street match. Council approved the grant agreement, creation of an accounting fund, budget recognition of the $25 million award and two full-time staff positions to manage grant requirements for five years. Staff noted a minor amendment to contract dates to align the five-year performance period with the council’s approval date so the city preserves the full implementation period.
Council praised staff for securing one of the largest SS4A awards in the nation; staff said procurement for Maple Street construction management is under way and projects would move quickly once the agreement was executed.
