Senate committee approves bill requiring reporting on provisional and rejected ballots

The Senate State Agencies & Governmental Affairs committee approved Senate Bill 549 on a voice vote after a brief presentation from the sponsor.
Senator Allen Clark, sponsor of SB 549, told the committee the measure would amend election law to require reporting on provisional and rejected ballots so officials and the public could understand why ballots were rejected and ‘‘get some kind of rhyme or reason’’ for the rejections. Clark said he had spoken with staff from the Secretary of State’s office, who suggested technical additions but did not oppose moving the bill forward.
There were no members who signed up to speak for or against the bill. Senator Ballinger moved to pass the bill, Senator English seconded, and the chair announced the bill passed by voice vote.
The committee did not record a roll‑call tally for the vote. The bill will proceed according to the legislative process for enacted bills.
