Committee members asked the Bureau of Legislative Research to gather statutory language and examples about states furnishing statues to the U.S. Capitol. Marta Garrity read aloud a provision saying states may provide marble or bronze statues “not exceeding 2 in the number for each state of deceased persons who have been citizens and illustrious for their historic renown or first distinguished civic or military service.”
Garrity offered to print a list of the approximately 101 persons currently commemorated (including the District of Columbia’s statue) so members would have a reference on the Senate floor. The committee scheduled a committee-of-the-whole meeting next week to open discussion to members and the public.
