Advisory council begins work on PANDAS/PANS guidance; multidisciplinary clinic seeing patients

State Representative Joe Cloud told the committee that the PANDAS/PANS advisory council has organized subcommittees to educate health-care providers and develop standard practice guidance for pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection (PANDAS/PANS). Cloud emphasized that the condition is underdiagnosed and that earlier recognition can improve outcomes.
Cloud said a multidisciplinary clinic at Arkansas Children’s Hospital already is seeing patients and that the council will convene joint meetings with the Senate and House public-health and welfare committees to develop outreach and clinical guidance. He said national patient advocates and clinicians who have developed early standards will assist the council and that materials have been provided to committee members.
