Committee greenlights interim study on repurposing spent nuclear fuel rods

Representative Jack Lademan presented House Bill 18-90 to create an interim study on the commercial application of technologies that could repurpose spent nuclear fuel rods to generate power. Lademan cited Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville as potential research partners and said federal grants are available for such studies.
He argued the technology could reduce nuclear waste storage problems and create manufacturing and training opportunities in Arkansas if commercially feasible. No witnesses signed to oppose the measure, and the committee voted to approve the interim study.
