Committee passes bill restoring municipal option to revisit partisan status every two years

Senator Johnson presented Senate Bill 180 to the committee, saying the measure restores a prior process that requires cities to revisit whether municipal elections will be partisan or nonpartisan every two years.
Johnson said the municipal league and its member cities support returning to a biannual revisitation so newly constituted councils can re-evaluate the city’s choice. ‘‘Cities have the option to determine whether they want to have their election as a partisan or a nonpartisan election,’’ he said.
After brief questions from committee members and no requests for public testimony, the committee moved and seconded a motion to pass and approved the bill by voice vote; the chair announced that the bill passes.
