Delta Airlines will relaunch thrice-daily service from Atlanta to Hilton Head Island beginning May 23 and add Saturday service from LaGuardia starting June 8; local officials hailed the move as an economic boost for the resort island.
Airport and local officials joined Delta Airlines representatives to announce the carrier will resume scheduled jet service to Hilton Head Island Airport. Brian Thomas, manager of domestic network planning for Delta, said the airline will "beginning May 23" operate three daily flights from its Atlanta hub and will add Saturday-only service from New York LaGuardia on June 8, using Embraer 170 aircraft.
John Rembold, the airport's director, introduced the announcement and said the new service will improve connectivity for residents, visitors and business travelers. Mayor John McCann said Delta's return will be a boon for the local economy and thanked the airport board, county and town partners for their work in expanding runway capacity and attracting service.
A Chamber of Commerce representative and airport officials noted the airport's recent infrastructure investments and said prior to the return of commercial jet service the annual economic impact of the airport was more than $166 million; officials said they expect the economic contributions to grow with Delta's service.
Delta officials gave operational details: service will operate on Embraer 170 aircraft and will provide connections to Delta's domestic and global network through the Atlanta and LaGuardia hubs. Local leaders said the addition complements other South Carolina Delta destinations and will increase travel options for the island.
