Merriam to accept parcels from Johnson County Parks and Rec; council authorizes mayor to sign agreement

MERRIAM — The City Council voted unanimously to accept several parcels tied to the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail that Johnson County Parks and Recreation previously held under long-term debt.
Director Slocum explained the county helped purchase land for the trail in 2004 and took on 20 years of debt with the understanding the parcels would revert to the city once the debt was retired. Slocum told the council that JCPRD has retired the debt and is proposing to transfer the parcels to the city "for a total of $10," and that the transfer has completed JCPRD's process.
Council moved to approve the agreement and authorize the mayor to execute it; the motion passed 7–0. Staff said the transfer formalizes ownership of trailhead parcels and other areas adjacent to Waterfall Park and the soccer fields, enabling the city to manage and maintain the land going forward.
