MERRIAM — The City Council voted unanimously to award a $251,157 contract to Kansas Heavy Construction to repair failing gabion baskets along Quail Creek adjacent to AdventHealth.
Director Kumpke told the council that public-works crews observed gabion baskets settling and that the city retained an engineering firm to design replacements. He said the lowest responsive bid included an alternate to replace the gabions with a block wall, which staff recommended "because it's less labor, less expensive, and [has] a longer useful life." He also said Johnson County Wastewater will reimburse Merriam for the portion of work that replaces a county-owned sanitary sewer crossing the site.
Council Member Hans moved approval of the contract and the motion was seconded; the council voted 7–0 to adopt the contract. Staff said, if approved, the contractor would order materials and could start work in October with completion by December, depending on weather.
The approval authorizes work that includes removing and replacing the degraded gabion baskets, restoring the site where it crosses AdventHealth property and repairing the trail and landscaping disturbed during construction.
